What this is

The framework these pieces are written inside, and how to read the dates under them.

Each piece here takes a passage from a teacher and works it against a stretch of an ordinary day. The passage is the fixed part. The writing around it gets re-rendered as the practice changes shape, so a piece carries both the date it was first sent and the revision shape it currently stands in.

The practice rests on three people who never met and shared no tradition. David Foster Wallace named the thing, in a commencement address called “This Is Water”: a default setting that construes everything through the self. Shunryu Suzuki had already measured it — in our everyday life, our thinking is ninety-nine percent self-centered. Śaṅkara, eight centuries earlier, supplied the mechanism: superimposition, the rope taken for a snake in dim light, removed by seeing rather than by courage.

Three roads, no contact, one diagnosis. That convergence is the standard any new source gets measured against, and it is why the writing keeps returning to the same four pillars.

The framework

Four pillars, and under them the movement all four sit inside. Every article declares one of these, and the count beside it is how many pieces stand there so far. A pillar nobody has written under yet is still part of the framework and still listed — the gap is the point, not an omission.

P1 — The Default Setting10 articles
Everyone runs on an automatic self-centered lens. Not a moral failing — factory configuration. You are the center of your own experience, immediate and vivid, and everyone else is peripheral. The lens was never chosen, which is exactly why it goes unexamined.
P2 — This Is Water4 articles
The most obvious, important realities are the hardest to see, precisely because they are ambient. Two young fish swim past an older fish who asks how the water is. They swim on a while, and then one of them asks: what is water?
P3 — Attention Is a Moral Act8 articles
Freedom is not the absence of tedium. It is what you do inside it. The checkout line, the traffic, the third status meeting — these are not the interruptions before real life. They are where the choice actually lives, because that is where the default setting is loudest.
P4 — Choose What You Worship8 articles
There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships; the only choice is what. Most of the defaults — money, intellect, being seen as competent, the body — will eat you alive, because they never deliver enough.
The movement — effort to look, no effort in the seeing7 articles
Not a pillar but the shape the practice takes. Turning to examine your own default read takes deliberate effort; nobody drifts into it. The recognition itself cannot be forced, and straining at it is more self. Effort to look, no effort in the seeing.

Reading the stamps

Under each title on the index sits a line like Sent 2026–09–15 · Shape 21. Sent is the day the piece first went out, and it never changes. Shape is the revision shape the writing currently stands in — the passage at the center of a piece stays fixed while the writing around it is re-rendered, so the two dates say different things on purpose.

There is no schedule and no argument being built. A passage, a stretch of an ordinary day, and what happens when the two are held against each other.
